Introverted Sensing
Teal’c initially served the Gua’uld, a series of alien system lords, because his people had always been their traditional servants. It was how the world worked, and his kind depended on Goa’uld symbiotes to function. Without them, they could not heal from injuries or survive, which meant they remained in subjugation for centuries. Once Teal’c realized an alternative, he took it and helped Jack O’Neill and his friends escape, then was drafted into SG-1.
Within SG-1, Teal’c maintains a lot of his traditional beliefs and practices, even after being freed from his symbiote. His meditation practices, his preference for traditional weapons, his love for his people, and his relationships with his old friends help ground him in the different, highly technologically advanced Stargate program. It’s also how he can reach his own kind, although he struggles to connect with his son, who is still brainwashed to think the Goa’uld are their gods. Teal’c devotes endless time and effort into trying to free his people from enslavement, to teach them about the false gods, and to show them there is another way to live, while still being respectful of their established beliefs.
When dealing with his own kind, Teal’c is able to rely on his previous experiences to help them understand that he is not trying to tear down something of value, but to show them that they alter it while still being connected to their ancestors and the ways of the past. He is also very pragmatic, and references previous cases when dealing with new situations (“Is this not like that situation on…” “Ah, you reference a movie, O’Neill. I have seen this movie!”).
Extraverted Thinking
Before he discovered the truth, Teal’c served as the First Prime of Apophis, a position he earned through being good at his job. Teal’c has natural leadership skills, detached thinking (what works is what he will do), and expected obedience from his subordinates. He admits that he calculated some ruthless tactics in war, to win battles and ensure few of his people were killed.
Even though he and Jack think in different ways, they are often in agreement about what situations are impossible to be victorious over, because they evaluate them based on probabilities. Teal’c nonetheless takes the most direct path forward; he will point out a method of escape, or a logical conclusion to a question, or that they must use their resources to get to the gate, or that there is no time to stand around and debate.
It frustrates him that he can present the facts to others, like his son, and not be believed; to Teal’c, a fact is a fact. It’s proven and trustworthy, and why you would ignore it to continue believing in a false god is absurd. This causes him to conflict with his son, whom he sees as irrational in most of his decisions (including his desire to get married at a very young age; Teal’c says “he is not ready” and “he is not yet a man” according to the standards of his people).
He takes things so literally that human jokes must be explained to him before he can understand them; and if they are illogical, he cannot find them amusing.
Introverted Feeling
Teal’c turns against his false god because Apophis demands that he kill innocent women and children; he has done many things for his god in the past, but this he cannot do. It goes against his inner value system. That is the moment he no longer believes in Apophis, and when Jack presents him with an opportunity to escape, he takes it. His previous obedience and belief turns into adamant disbelief and a firm conviction that the Goa’uld are evil. That motivates him to want to destroy them and drives 8 seasons of the show.
He is awkward in sharing his feelings with others, and hesitates to do so, which makes his scenes with his son somewhat constrained and emotionally awkward. Teal’c would rather suffer through his pain in silence, or leave it unaddressed among his friends. He will tell them that he is “upset,” but not elaborate, and they have to coax his true feelings out of him. More often, it comes out with forceful convictions than sob stories. Teal’c occasionally will share something from his past that is painful or brought him shame, but only to connect to a specific person and to convince them the path they are on is wrong.
Extroverted Intuition
Teal’c has very little interest in theories for their own sake and leaves most of the speculating to Samantha Carter and Daniel Jackson. He will sometimes suggest that based on what they have seen on other planets, this answer may be possible, but it’s always grounded in a fact of the situation or a shared experience.
His ability to hold onto many of his former beliefs and traditions while interpreting them in a new way (leaving out the Goa’uld as gods) shows that he can hold onto two ideas at the same time, and shift his perspective to give something new meaning after removing what he dislikes from it. Ne is good at this.
Teal’c is very interested in new things and eager to explore life on Earth, by exposing himself to movies, music, television shows, and unusual foods. Several times, he shows his offbeat sense of humor and fun by showing up in silly outfits with Jack (including a cowboy, for pizza and beer and a westerns marathon).
The Enneagram 1
Honor is important to him. He would rather die than live without it. His strong sense of right and wrong is what gives him the courage to stand up to Apophis and disobey his orders, even though doing so was a death sentence, made him a hunted man, and forced him to give up his people, his position, and his previous life. It seemed worth it, because killing innocent people is wrong.
Teal’c is very self-contained and always in control over his emotions; even when he is in pain, he does not share it with others or complain about it, and he looks down on people who draw too much attention to themselves or seem to be undisciplined. He is very disciplined, training, being on time, maintaining his sense of duty, meditating, and moderating his activities. He conflicts with his son because his son disrespects him. Teal’c will put up with this, but not allow him to speak ill of his mother.
He finds Jack’s constant tendency to crack jokes somewhat confusing, because he prefers a more serious, studied manner of being.
The 9 Wing
In intense situations, Teal’c remains quiet and calm. He is “sure” that they will get through this, that something good will happen, and being upset about it won’t fix the problem. He does get angry sometimes, but for the most part, he is stoic, composed, and withdrawn. He is quite content to maintain a quiet lifestyle of meditation and focus whenever he has down time and no interest in introducing disorderly things into his routine.
