Murray Bauman MBTI & Enneagram | Stranger Things

MBTI Type: ENTP

Tackle demonic infestations alongside a trio of supernatural crime fighters in The Byron Trilogy

Murray is known for two things—his accurate deductions about people, places, and events (he is on to Barbara having been killed and her murder being covered up by the lab long before he finds out the truth; he senses Jonathan and Nancy have feelings for each other before either of them will admit it to one another, much less themselves; and he makes a similar guess about Joyce and Hopper, though both deny it), and his blunt, tactless manner. He says whatever he thinks, and whatever he concludes. He finds Jonathan stupid for not being able to follow his complex train of thought (he says to make things palatable, you have to ‘water them down’ so people will believe it). He realizes that to make people accept things, you have to find a rational thing that they can believe is true (even if it’s a lie) rather than confront them with something their pea-brain can’t accept. He is open-minded and willing to reverse all of his theories about Barb when Nancy tells him his timeline and conclusions are wrong. Though militantly opposed to the Russians, Murray overcomes his prejudice to become friends with Alexei, and teaches him about American culture through cartoons and food and carnival games. He is very logical, and tries to ground Joyce all the time (telling her to be careful, that her theories are wrong, that they need evidence before they believe Hopper is alive). His low Fe comes out in how he likes to bait people, tease them, and get a rise out of them. He urges Nancy and Jonathan to “get it on” and get over themselves, and tells the same to Hopper and Joyce (much to their consternation and denial). His Fe is pretty poor in terms of knowing how to encourage others or comfort them, but he is provocative and knows how to manipulate public emotions to suit their agenda (exposing a bad business and then parking his butt outside to watch them drive off and mock them on their way out). Murray isn’t very bound to details (Si) but also spends a lot of time at home, holed up with his own particular way of doing things, and does not like intrusions into his privacy.

Enneagram: 5w6

Murray is extremely analytical and trusts his own logic over anyone else; they are idiots who are less-informed than he is, and who don’t understand the nugget of truth he has found that feeds into his conspiracy theories. He actively dislikes people and tries to avoid them, choosing to live alone in a bunker and being annoyed at the idea that people coming there could lead the “wrong” authorities to him and expose him. He shoots down “stupid ideas” and points out their logical fallacies, and refuses to let his feelings get in the way of whatever needs to be done. He spends most of his time in his bunker among his research, arming himself with knowledge out of a concern that someone might attempt to mislead him.

is cynical, suspicious, and downright paranoid; arming his home with a variety of security cameras and devices, accusing people of leading the Russians to his doorstep, and yet always winding up ‘helping people out’ – even if he does so in an obnoxious, know it all kind of way. He cautions Joyce to be careful in breaking the Russian doll in case it has explosives in it, and warns Nancy and Jonathan to be careful in how they expose the laboratory. He’s often, in early seasons, at the police station trying to report his findings to the authorities, which shows that despite all of his paranoia, he also has a 6 wing love/hate relationship with the authority and the government.
