INTJ 3w4 Characters
Gothel is a naturally manipulative woman, who easily figures out how to read into people’s intentions and get them to do exactly what she wants; she plays mind games with Rapunzel about her life in the tower, she tries to turn her against Flynn, she turns two thieves into her thugs and then betrays them, and messes with their state of mind. Her game is long-term; she intends to keep Rapunzel all to herself until she dies of old age, sustaining her own health, vitality, and beauty for many years. And rather than go after Rapunzel herself and drag her home, she ‘hires’ others to do it for her (low Se). Gothel likes to keep things under her control for her own use; when discovering the flower that keeps her young, she devises a way to conceal it from the outside world. Then, when confronted with the realization she cannot steal Rapunzel’s hair without losing its healing properties, she does the most logical thing in the world: steal the baby! She keeps her locked up in a tower, using fantastical stories of threats from the outside world, to try to keep her content. Once Rapunzel runs off, Gothel recruits others to accomplish her ultimate ends and goes about it in a very straightforward, carefully planned-out manner. She actually negotiates with Rapunzel at the end, since she sees the logic of not having to fight with her all the time to use her hair (she will let her heal Eugene). And rather than a Fe statement of “look what you made me do,” she tells Rapunzel that Eugene’s death is the consequence of her bad behavior. She is a selfish woman who thinks only about her own feelings, who believes her way is “law,” and has no interest in Rapunzel’s happiness or wellbeing. Gothel snatches the baby from the cradle without a thought for the princess’ parents and intends to keep her hostage indefinitely. Her inability to comprehend “love” and what it entails contributes mightily to her downfall. Her inferior Se shows only in her contentment with a quiet life and in her impulsiveness under stress (stealing the child in the first place), along with her over-focus on her own beauty and well-being; she does not want to accept the natural aging process, but to thwart it.
Enneagram: 3w4
Gothel is all about appearances – she is the embodiment of an evil image type, in that nothing matters except to remain beautiful and youthful forever; she deprives the rest of the world of using the sunlight flower just to extend her own appearance for many years, then when she discovers she can’t cut off Rapunzel’s hair and use it for the same purpose, she steals the baby and keeps her hidden away in a tower. She is self-absorbed and preoccupied with her own appearance, but also willing to “be” whatever others want her to be; she deceives Rapunzel into believing her that she is her mother, that the world is terrible and frightening place, and then at the end, she says, “Fine, you want me to be the bad guy? I’ll be the bad guy,” and turns vicious. Her 4 wing is self-absorbed and dramatic, only concerned with its own ends, and inconsiderate of others’ suffering compared to her own tragic aging process.
