Rapunzel MBTI & Enneagram | Tangled

ESFJ 6w7 Characters

Dominant Extroverted Feeling – ease of emotional communication and shaping their actions around how their decisions affect others: Rapunzel’s entire world is built around keeping Mother Gothel happy; her emotions hinge so mightily on how her caretaker will feel about her abandoning the castle to pursue her dream that her dream itself is nearly forfeit out of a desire to keep harmony. She is so warm, affirming, and desirous of sharing her feelings with others that in short order, she gets an entire ragtag  band of cutthroats and thieves singing together and spilling their deepest dreams. Her emotions are often out of control, and yo-yo back and forth between what she wants (“Oh, I love this! I am so happy! This is the best day ever!”) and enormous guilt over being “selfish” (“I am the worst daughter ever!”). She quite easily opens up and shares her emotions with Flynn and is also good at reading his emotions and coaxing him to share them.

Auxiliary Introverted Sensing – working with what exists and their personal history to make an immediate impact: She entertains herself every day by doing the same sorts of (sensory) things over and over, from painting every inch of her tower room to reading all her books and cleaning up… but after awhile, the mundane routine gets to her, and prompts her to start thinking about life outside the tower with a sort of naive idealism. She has immortalized a symbol from her childhood (something she saw above her crib) and feels it “drawing her” to the floating lights, with an understanding that it somehow “relates to her.” Rapunzel is easily mislead by Mother Gothel, into having suspicions about Flynn’s motivations and assuming he doesn’t care about her. She thinks her way out of bad situations by falling back on things that worked in the past (her hair has healing powers and is a source of light) and things that seem like they could work, rather than provable facts.

Tertiary Extroverted Intuition – an interest in many different possibilities and in seeing connections between unrelated ideas: Rapunzel knows she needs to follow the magic lanterns; it’s a motif she repeats over and over again in her artwork, since she feels strongly drawn to it. She does want to follow her hunch about the lights, but then assumes she will return to her life again, having solved the mystery. She has no grand idealistic vision for her life, other than to understand (Ti) something nagging at her subconscious. Her Ne is simple and idealistic, eager to share her dreams with an entire tavern full of people, and get them to share theirs in return (Fe/Ne).

Inferior Introverted Thinking – critical under stress, can get hung up on the “logic” of things: She does tap into her inferior Ti at times: she wants to know why the lanterns are an annual ritual, what motivates Flynn, etc. Her obsessive analyzing of her own feelings and emotions in her mood swings show an attempt to rationalize her reactions with weak analytical skills…

Enneagram 6 – a humble, loyal, kind individual who questions everything in a desire to understand it: Rapunzel cares so much about being a “good person,” she struggles to disappoint Mother Gothel without passing judgment on her own actions. She feels very responsible for others and their welfare, and is willing to go with MG to save Flynn’s life, sacrificing her own freedom in the process. It doesn’t seem important, compared to making sure the man she cares about lives to see another day. Rapunzel mentally bounces back and forth between what an awful person she is to leave the tower and consider running away from her life (even for a short time) and how fantastic it is going to be, to finally do all the things she has wanted to do forever. When Flynn enters her tower, she knocks him out, ties him up, and assumes he is up to something, but then sees the potential in him and how he could help her go on an adventure. She believes a lie about him out of fear that maybe he doesn’t really care about her after all, and is easily persuaded by MG to be afraid of the outside world after hearing her scary stories.

7 wing brings in a sense of fun, humor, and laughter, or avoidance of pain through mental distractions and adventures: Rapunzel is her best self once she breaks free of her “mother” and goes out into the world, where she shows a sparkling enthusiasm for life and wants to try out everything and meet everyone and sees magic all around her. It delights her to be part of something like the lanterns. She also becomes more assertive and decides to place her faith in Flynn, despite knowing he is a thief. She constantly chooses to believe the best in him and pushes him toward that end.
