Dodi spends most of his time trying to please other people and thinking about how his actions affect them, and finds it hard to shut out criticism or refuse to listen to others, even when it goes against his better judgment. He wants and has something of a successful career in the movies, but his father constantly demands he return home and attend to things in Paris, so he spends a lot of his time abroad rather than in California. He easily identifies with and is able to sense and feel Diana’s emotions, his own often escalating right alongside hers (the more uneasy she feels being watched in public, the more anxious he becomes). He frames things in terms of how they are affecting others rather than himself (his father ‘upset’ Diana; she is waiting for a call from her boys; he is sorry he brought her to Paris the way his father wanted him to). Dodi is also tied to his family and his legacy and duties more than able to set his own agenda; because he is so passive and accommodating and wants to please, he goes along with whatever his father wants from him. He asks Diana to marry him to please his dad more than himself; showing that he cares about traditional things to some extent. He also misreads the situation and speaks too soon, then is cautiously optimistic despite being hurt over her refusal (low Ne). He finds it hard to deal with how much paparazzi follows her everywhere she goes, because he has no experience with such things in his own daily life. (He knows it was a mistake to bring her to Paris only after the press trap them inside the hotel and won’t let them go anywhere in peace.) Dodi does look forward to a potential life out from under his father’s thumb, but alas, his life is cut short and he cannot enjoy it.

Dodi is at the mercy of whomever is around him, and buffeted by their opinions. He tries in every way to please his father and earn his respect, while minimizing any “upset” in his environment. At one point, he is anxious that his father wanted to speak to Diana, because he says the man “rushed things, and now she’s upset!” It pains him to break off his engagement, and he avoids his girlfriend and tries to diffuse the tension. When Diana encourages him to stand up to his father, the only way Dodi can do so is to hang up on him, and then pretend to tell him how he truly feels—otherwise, he lacks the emotional wherewithal to assert himself. He struggles to know what he wants and pursue it, because his father does not approve, and rushes into asking Diana to marry him to please his father, then feels awful because she said no and did not feel prepared for the question. He is very in tune with what she is feeling and reflects her anxiety, wishing he had not brought her to the zoo of Paris.
