Andrea Sachs MBTI & Enneagram | The Devil Wears Prada

ISFJ 6w7 Characters

Andy feels a bit overwhelmed working for Miranda at first, because she doesn’t know how to do anything, and the magazine world seems to move so fast, but once she starts trying hard, she learns how to handle everything competently and efficiently. As Nigel tells her, when her life starts falling apart, it’s time for a raise. Over time, Andy starts anticipating and meeting Miranda’s needs before she even asks for things, using her experiences with her to learn from her what to expect. At first, she wants to be a journalist and a writer and get taken seriously, but winds up working in fashion instead. When Nigel asks her why she hasn’t made more of an effort to fit in, Andy says, “Miranda hired me… she knows what I look like,” inferring that her appearance doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. But when she finds out it does, then she goes out of her way to fit in more, develops an interest in fashion, learns how to put together her own outfits, and cares about her appearance. Andy makes a lot of decisions based on how others are going to feel about it – she has the chance to go inside and meet an editor at a gala who could take off her career, but she turns it down so that she can get home to Nate and bring him a cupcake for his birthday instead. When Miranda tells her that she is going to Paris instead of Emily, Andy argues that she couldn’t do that to Emily—she has been looking forward to this for so long and so hard. Later, she says she could never do to Nigel what Miranda did, and Miranda points out that she already did it, to Emily… and that causes Andy to walk out on her job, because she doesn’t want to become like Miranda. Her reasoning is always others and their feelings, and her judgment is objective (her friends are “assholes” because they harass her about her boss after she has brought them nice and expensive things from work). She often rants in real time about how much she hates her job, and Miranda, and then winds up doing the twins’ homework for them anyway, because she decides not to quit after all. For the time being, Andy puts aside her desire to be a writer… but goes back to that dream later on, once she realizes her own goals and dreams are not in alignment with the role she is playing right now.

Enneagram: 6w7

Andrea starts out as an ‘intellectual’ who looks down on girls for being vapid enough to care about fashion, and who just wants to do her job—but she is constantly neurotic, terrorized by the idea of needing to please her boss, and desperate to hold her life together. She cares so much about her friends, she lets her ego dictate her behavior toward them (until late in the story, when she starts prioritizing work over them) – even though staying late to a party and meeting a magazine editor could get Andy her dream job, she still chooses to rush home and wish her boyfriend a happy birthday instead, out of loyalty and a sense that she needs to keep her promises to him. When, as Nigel puts it, she tries hard and doesn’t get “a gold star,” she becomes reactive and whines about it to Nigel, then asks him for help in doing what she can to make Miranda like and respect her. Andy is still reactive, anxious to please, and warm and funny toward people, but she becomes more and more 3ish as she drifts away from her core values—she starts caring more about her appearance than her relationships, more about her job than her connections, and it’s not until the horror of Miranda saying how much they are now alike hits her that she tosses her phone into the fountain and gives up the job she fought so hard to keep. Her 7 wing is extroverted, light, and fun. She makes a lot of jokes, teases her boyfriend to get him to lighten up, and also is willing to take risks, have a good time, and even sleep with someone she barely knows in Paris. But ultimately, it all comes back to her loyalty—when she finds out Miranda is going to be replaced, Andy “fervently tries to warn” her, stands up for her, and defends her, even when others trash her.
