MBTI Type: ISFJ
Charlie is a meticulous employee at whatever he chooses to do, but has a particular talent for keeping track of money, running down details for taxes, and advising other people on how to stay out of trouble with the government. When he starts working in town and around the farm, they trust him to keep track of all the numbers and who picks the most berries for the baskets. He enjoys a quieter life in the country, even though it offers stimulation in the form of the Larkin family. He’s generally hesitant to leap into things without asking questions about them first. Charlie is considerate of other people and their emotional needs and has trouble not going along with what they want from him, even though he tries hard at first to get Pop to admit to tax evasion and settle his debts. Even though he doesn’t turn him in, and chooses to quit his job, he still has a strong belief that Pop is doing something wrong, because of the way it “hurts” the government. Yet, he changes his mind about Pop after seeing him doing with his own money (untaxed) what the government claims to do with other people’s money—namely, helping people with whatever they need, building up the community, and ensuring that even thieves don’t wind up in jail if it will hurt them in the long term. Charlie is madly in love with a girl, but hesitant to tell her about it for fear of rejection, yet can talk through his feelings when he works up the courage to speak to her. He’s often bolstered by other people telling him that what he’s doing is right or good. He’s curious and loves to learn things about other people and is quite good at repairing things that need fixed, although he doesn’t often need to pitch in and help. He doesn’t have much of an imagination, other than to hope that Mariette will decide to stay there instead of going to Paris, and his willingness to look the other way at untraditional lifestyles.
Enneagram: 9w1
Charlie just wants to get along with people, which means he has gone along with others’ agendas many different times. His father wanted him to get a stable job, so he went into the government to collect taxes and check up on people; when Pop Larkin starts talking to him about a different life, Charlie starts wondering about changing things and goes along with him. During the Christmas episode, when his parents visit, he tries to keep the peace between them and the Larkins, and gets into trouble with his girlfriend for not standing up for her enough. He’s rather timid around her, because of her dominant energy, and also tries to control the kids when their kids go on vacation, but winds up compromising and allowing them to watch television when they insist. Charlie also has a strong 1 wing. He tells Pop it’s not right to fail to report his taxes and that the law is going to catch up with him at some point; he doesn’t want to take advantage of their hospitality or stay there, in case it’s seen as a bribe. He is hard on himself for his mistakes and wants to do right by his employer, and his new friends.
