Ma Larkin MBTI & Enneagram | The Larkins

ESFJ 2w3 Characters

Ma has a big heart and welcomes most people into it. She cares about and manages all of her children, while monitoring what’s considered meaningful and appropriate to her community. Ma also doesn’t like people not agreeing with her point of view, and can be both competitive with her sister (attempting to outdo her in various little ways) and desirous of her approval and trying to meet her halfway. She likes to look after people, is free with her advice, and can be loud and boisterous. Ma easily introduces herself wherever she goes, but also likes to stay at home and look after her kids. Ma feels quite secure about her environment and loves to take part in local events and do things for the town. She sees the potential in Charlie and tries to nurture it to flourish, but rarely questions her own motivations and doesn’t waste much energy on analyzing things. Ma is sentimental about their various little traditions and doesn’t want her daughter to move to France and “miss out” on their quiet parish life. She’s afraid she’s going to go out there and never come home, but unlike Pop, wants to be more proactive in finding reasons for her to stay and she thinks Charlie is one possibility. She pushes them together, hoping he can entice her free-spirited girl to want to stick around at home longer. Ma convinces Pop in one episode to take a vacation and they go have fun by the seaside together, but then she apologizes for dragging him away from the countryside he loves best. She’s excited about new things and ideas, and indulges him in all of his many whims, which includes his various money schemes (buying airplanes, buying cars, buying and selling property, etc).

Enneagram: 2w3

Ma is far more image-centric than her husband and uses her line to 8 a lot to reinforce her strong opinions about him. When others in the town sneer at him for being a lazy gadabout, she pushes their image and even making up lies or polishing the truth so he comes out better (saying that they are ‘landed gentry’ now). She often ‘helps out’ in the community, in one instance, taking over a total stranger’s wedding and buying booze, then talking the bride out of getting married (because it’s not what she really wants), and offering her an ‘out’ with her family by presenting a different lifestyle (she and Pop never got married, and they are happy as clams!). Ma always lays out a huge breakfast spread for people, welcomes Charlie into the house and insists on taking care of him and he needs to stay with them free, and is active in her community with ‘do-good’ things. She isn’t all that concerned with being ‘good,’ so much as looking good. They may appear to be poor and uncouth to other people, but that doesn’t mean they lack worth and their kids aren’t geniuses!
