Mariette is a hands-on opportunist, who loves to do physical things like ride horses, go for walks (she says she just wants to sit and enjoy the evening when she runs into Charlie on a log), etc. She dreams of going to France ‘where things actually happen’ and seeing all the places she has dreamed about. She proactively dates guys and gets impatient for them to make their move on her (she doesn’t feel like waiting around forever). Mariette has her heart set on France and intends to go—it’s her one dream in life. Mariette doesn’t talk about her feelings at all; she acts on them, usually by taking a long walk to center herself, or going out to the barn and putting herself to work with the horses. Mariette’s a nice girl, but knows her own mind and what she wants; she intends to see Paris and more of the world, and even though she cares about her family, does not mind leaving them behind when she finally gets around to it. Mariette often is frank and logical, pointing out obvious solutions to get things done and putting people in their place who cross her. She turns a nice profit with the antenna and says that a bit of the profit is hers, since it cost her less in the first place (she negotiated down the price).

Mariette is an assertive girl who also has a ‘problem’ with her temper; she does whatever she wants regardless of being told not to. She just… confidently takes herself away to see the world, goes out on dates with a handsome new man, and tells her Pop not to worry, since she’s in charge and can more than take care of things. Mariette doesn’t get pushed around and negotiates a lower price for the TV antenna, then decides her siblings are becoming too invested in television, and sells it for a profit to the vicar. She also has a bad temper and attacks people frequently, at one point beating up another girl in a strawberry patch (the two of them roll around, smashing berries and screaming at each other, before she storms away). Mariette tells people off, and isn’t afraid to stand up to them, such as when a girl dumps wine down her dress in a fit of jealousy. She knows it’s right for her to go to France, so she goes, even though she’s fond of her family. When a carnie talks love to her sister and then doesn’t follow through on any of his promises, she forces him to write her a ‘nice letter’ to let her down, since she won’t have anyone messing with her sister. She wants to get out of the community and see the wider world; she worries she might get stuck here, and never experience all that life offers. The only reason she might stay in the community is if it becomes more ‘exciting.’
