Pop is always trying out some scheme or another and filling up his yard with junk of all sorts. He’s a shrewd businessman who buys buildings and knocks them down, convinces someone to leave a neighbor alone by selling him the house and then refusing him access (all so she can keep the deposit, since he is breaking the contract, not her), and goes out of his way to make things light and fun for a couple on their way to get married (he tells them that they needn’t rush into anything or live a traditional life; he and his wife in fact never got married, but still have a brood of intelligent kids!). He’s very logical and good at making money, but also good at spending it in large quantities on fun things like televisions, airplanes (that don’t run), and Rolls Royce automobiles (they paint a coat of arms on the door and pretend to be aristocrats). Pop has a heart of gold in that he genuinely cares about his neighbors, family, and friends and goes out of his way to help them. He considers most things his business to do something about, including stopping the railway from closing (even though no one ever uses it, including himself). Pop tries to make things ‘better’ between others and does what they want to cheer them up, without much thinking about the consequences (he kisses a woman to make her feel better, and then laughs at the idea that the town might think he’s cheating on Ma). He has no real foresight, interest in the future, philosophical leanings, or plans.

Pop is a good-natured con man for the most part, but he has a heart of gold; he’s always optimistic and not at all bothered by details like paying taxes (he figures he does such nice things around town, why should the government take a cut?). He flat out lies to the tax man, insisting they make no income, when in fact he makes a great deal of money with his various side businesses and temporary hustles. He is always cheering people up, rushing out to be around them, and planning fun capers for his family, including over-indulgences in the way of food, presents, and community larks. He wants things to be fun and for everyone to have a good time, but can also be shrewd in how he keeps things light. Nothing stumps or defeats him, and he has a pleasant excuse for everything. He is generally affable and pleasant, likable and straightforward, self-deprecating and attached to his family and friends, but sometimes questions whether others have good intentions, and volunteers himself to help track down the ‘Christmas burglar.’ He has a great desire to serve his community and bring people together.
