Scar has an over-reaching vision for his life, to become king by betraying Mufasa and Simba to death. He schemes and manipulates behind his brother’s back, deferring and snarling at him but never pushing him so far that he will encourage backlash. Scar is so obsessed with his own kingship that he refuses to leave Pride Rock during a drought, because that wasn’t in his original plan—rejecting the brutal reality that they’re all going to starve to death, in favor of an idealized notion he is a wonderful monarch. He constantly plans for his future, reads and manipulates the emotions of everyone around him, and sets all the film’s actions into motion. Scar has this delusional idea of a brand new way of living, in which lions and hyenas are a master ruling race. Scar shows Fe all the way. His motivation of becoming king is to earn others’ admiration (“And seen for the wonder I am!”), and he charms, persuades, and digs deep into the feelings of others to accomplish it. There’s no reason to hurt Simba by blaming him for his father’s death if he’s going to be dead in five minutes anyway, but Scar does it regardless, just to be cruel and feed off his hurt feelings. Scar unites the hyena and becomes their leader by promising them things, always taking the time to get in cruel little digs here and there (telling Simba to practice his “little roar” and making Simba think everyone knows about his flaws). He is driven by emotions in many of his choices, such as revealing to Simba that he murdered Mufasa and then attempting to throw him off the cliff, and reacting with fury when anyone suggests he is not reasonable (his choice to let the hyenas take over the Pride Lands resulted in a lack of food for the lions). He thinks he’s rational, but he’s not. Scar shows a lot of inferior Se in his inability to adjust to his environment, and his cluelessness in acting for himself; he has the hyenas do all the “dirty work” for him, by sending them after Simba (when he could easily kill him instead, when he finds him near Mufasa’s body… but he knows it would be obvious he did it, and it’s better if his mother finds Simba torn apart by hyenas). His attempt to kill Simba at the end of the film, rather than accepting his defeat, is ultimately what gets him thrown off a cliff and murdered by the hyenas.

Scar feels at a disadvantage because of his lean physique, and sets himself apart by focusing on his intense mental facilities instead: “When it comes to brute strength, I’m at the shallow end of the dream pool.” He covets all his brother possesses for himself, operating on an intense jealousy of others’ happiness and material satisfaction. Scar is elitist and self-absorbed, automatically thinking he is the smartest lion around and wanting everyone to know it. His 3 wing demands respect, can be showy and melodramatic, as well as able to sell his “vision” to the hyenas. Whenever Scar is under stress, he deliberately sinks into unhealthy 2 disintegration manipulation tactics—trying to appeal to others, assure them of his love for them, needing them to accept him, and by using manipulation tactics to appeal to their feelings.
