This Ariel is very proactive in her own life, and does things hands-on, more so than the animated Ariel. She saves the dog from drowning by pushing him to the lifeboat, then dives down and rescues Erik. Later on land, she careens a carriage around the island with no concern for her personal safety, drags Erik into the middle of a dance, sneaks around the palace, explores his library full of land treasures, and even attacks Ursula to steal back her voice, before steering a sunken ship into the sea witch to kill her and break the spell over her father. She leaps at the chance to have a pair of legs with minimal hesitation, confident that she can easily blend into the above-water world, and never thinks the witch might have ulterior motives (weak Ni). She is very firm on insisting upon doing things her own way and living up to her own potential; when she leaves her family, Ariel is so enthusiastic about this, she doesn’t bother to inform anyone of the deal she made or where she went, showing that her own feelings and thoughts preoccupy her and consideration of their desires doesn’t factor into her decisions. When her heart gets broken, she goes off by herself to feel things, rather than seeks the comfort of her friends (Fi types grieve alone and don’t need to talk about it until they’ve processed and dealt with it themselves). Ariel can be quite logical and rational at times, showing her assertive lower Te, but mostly she pursues whatever excites her the most, and makes decisions through what she feels is right for her life.

Ariel’s song expresses her worldview well, that she is not satisfied with what lies under the sea, but is convinced there’s more in the world above to experience (showing the frustration of a 7, and the belief that happiness must lie somewhere else and be chased!). “I want more,” she sings, and once she reaches the above-sea world, she enthusiastically engages with everything she sees, chasing pleasure, fun, entertainment, and forgetting about her mission (thanks to the witch’s sub-clause in the contract). She thinks everything out of her reach must be magical and special. But when she finds it’s hard and she can’t win over Erik immediately, she feels tempted to give up and it takes her friends to bolster her into action by telling her the truth, that Ursula is deceiving Erik with her own voice! She is naive to believe in the witch’s intentions, but also hesitant to commit immediately, showing that she has some degree of 6ness in being unsure (but still, as an assertive core, taking the plunge and assuming she can do this). Ariel often consults her friends about anything she doesn’t know and trusts them to guide her, even though some of them are less than accurate in their stories.
