Jo is consistently emotional and appropriate to the situation. She tries to put others at ease, and is pleasant and accommodating to her friends even if she’s worried about her missing son—she doesn’t tell them what is going on, so as not to ruin their enjoyment of her company. Jo also politely tolerates her fans and warms up to them, sharing little things about her life on the stage. She doesn’t want her husband’s temper to disrupt their dinner and asks him not to be confrontational toward the man that jilted them for another person, but also complains instantly about it to Benjamin. When asked to perform in public, she does so without hesitation to keep others happy—and she also takes a pill when her husband asks her to, because he insists she is becoming hysterical. When she finds out her son has been kidnapped, that is indeed her first reaction—to get upset, talk about it, and cry, but at other times she is very controlled in her use of her Fe. Jo really isn’t good at being detached, though; her heart and her feelings are worn on her sleeve. Her middle functions are less clear, but she has chosen a normal life as a mother and housewife and wants more kids. She wishes they could move back to New York so she could still be on the stage, but has given up her dreams of having a family and support her husband. She teases him that their trip to Morocco doesn’t look much different from their trip to New Mexico, when he lost all that money in the casinos. Jo also notices details more than he does, especially taking notice of someone watching them and leaping to the conclusion that they are being followed (she is right). She theorizes about motivations, and has a unique way of looking at things (saying that his patients have paid for their trip, and assigning different ones to different moments along the way).

Jo is the worrier of the family; she suspects people almost immediately and doesn’t like her husband sharing random information with a total stranger on the bus (she says now he knows everything about us, from where you live and work to what your career is and where we’ve been, and we know nothing about him!). Jo thinks a woman is spying on them at the hotel, and doesn’t like her, until she finds out the woman is a fan of hers; she points out her observing them more than once. She is easily upset by things, and fearful of how information might be used against them, but also more aware of safety than her husband, and cautions him against being too forthcoming. Jo does not want him to create scenes in public, or to confront anyone. She will go on adventures despite her fears, and is generally good-natured, enthusiastic, optimistic, and pleasant.
