Billie Sutton MBTI & Enneagram | The Resident

INTP 5w6 Characters

Billie is very logical and thinks before she acts; she does not want to call out her rapist without considering the potential fall-out first, and when the heat gets to be too intense, she wants to call it all off and keep silent in order to make things easier for her son (he doesn’t know he is a “rape baby” or what happened to her). She shows a lot of inferior Fe in their relationship – wanting to protect his feelings and do what is best for him, but also not wanting to emotionally connect to him or be tender with him. Billie at first pushes him away without any explanation, but then goes on to look out for him and to scold him, if necessary, about his arrogance as a Resident. She also falls in love with Conard, but doesn’t know how to admit to this, and it only becomes obvious to them both after she’s almost killed by two furious visitors who accused her of killing their mother. She says she doesn’t want to “ruin” their relationship (with Conrad) by being emotional, or to “take away” what he has with another woman. It’s only after she learns how to connect to her feelings that she is able to find balance in her relationships. Middle-functions wise, Billie was so confident of her medical skills even when a newbie resident, she did surgeries without consent. Billie is always thinking about her future, and what to do about it, and trying to see the broader picture. She blocks her son from getting to know her at first, then is ruthless about not wanting him to repeat her mistakes (arrogance in the ER leading to someone getting hurt or killed), but changes her mind and welcomes him into her life after all. Billie does not want to impose on or ruin her friendship with Conrad by admitting to her crush on him or her feelings toward him, since she sees how it could affect their work. She is detailed and meticulous, warning a fellow doctor that she can’t possibly learn two advanced kinds of brain surgery at once, that she needs to pick one, because if she makes any mistakes, someone could be paralyzed or die because of it. Several times, Billie warns others about the consequences of their decisions or helps them to understand how this could go wrong for them, in her desire to guide them in a better direction. She is also somewhat sentimental, attached to the past, and leery of disruptions to it. Experiencing the pushback after she goes public with her allegations against a prominent doctor causes her to change her mind and want to back off, showing a Ne-ish tendency to see things from various angles and to shift as events unfold.

Enneagram: 5w6

Billie is a hard woman to get to know, because she puts up so many boundaries; when her son tries to reconnect to her, she tells him to leave her alone and not contact her again, but later softens toward him and is concerned with his feelings. She cuts herself off from her emotions to get the job done, and as a result, can’t understand her own feelings at times. Billie was super self-confident when she got into medicine, but after a failure that hurt someone, has more self-doubt and is at first hesitant to come back into a Residency. She likes to think things through before she commits to them, and to remain detached and efficient. Fear of rejection, or of intruding on someone else’s happiness holds her back from expressing her feelings to Conrad at first. Billie insists on standing up for herself in court, and holding her rapist accountable for assaulting her, because “he doesn’t deserve to judge the ethics of other doctors as a pedophile,” and has no problem with the blow-back, but when it threatens to expose her secret to her son and to hurt him, Billie wants to give up her accusations and is willing to tell a lie in front of the board to stop this from happening; she is shocked that her son shows up, tells the truth, and holds his father accountable, because she never expected him to do that for her.
