Devon Pravesh MBTI & Enneagram | The Resident

ESFJ 9w1 Characters

Devon is a considerate and proper young man, who comes to the hospital confident of his abilities and with a natural knack for getting people to like him and confide in him. He’s also up front about his feelings, including the ones he has for Conrad at first (he sees him as blunt and abrasive, until Nic points out that Conrad is one of the best doctors around and Devon can learn a lot from his guidance). He makes a lot of his decisions from his heart, or based on what is best for the humans involved, sometimes pitting him against the ETJs who run the hospital’s financial resource department. Devon finds creative ways to force the hospital to give people care, whom they might not provide for otherwise because of insurance limitations, including drawing public attention to certain patients. He tries very hard at first to please his parents and abide by their wishes, and to avoid them being disappointed in any of his decisions, including almost marrying a girl because they want it and he isn’t sure of his true feelings for her until he contrasts them with how Conrad is around Nic. Devon has an excellent memory for details and is very good at comparing what he is seeing in front of him to what he learned at medical school, or from other patients. He is meticulous in his paperwork and concerned with doing things the “right way.” For a while, he is a bit of a stickler for the rules, but as he gets to know Conrad better, Devon branches out into low Ne explorations. He chooses to live an alternative lifestyle to his upbringing, he comes up with creative solutions to problems, and he considers changing his focus; rather than just be a general practitioner, he decides to go into cancer screenings and test trials. Devon also has a strong feeling that something is wrong, when the girl he loves who is mixed up with an evil pharmaceutical company goes missing. No one else believes anything bad has happened to her, but Devon becomes convinced she’s either been killed or is in real trouble, and he does everything in his power to bring down those responsible. Devon shows low Ti once in a while, as he questions why things are happening and can’t let it go, but whenever he does say no to a treatment, he has a humanitarian reason backing up what seems to be a “cold” answer.

Devon makes decisions based on his gut instincts, and resists others’ attempts to pressure him, because he determines right from wrong based on the evidence and what he decides is compassionate or not. He learns a hard lesson about this on the first day of his residency, when he refuses to stop trying to resuscitate a drug addicted patient, and winds up making her heart beat after 27 minutes, rendering her brain dead. Later, he instinctively decides things based on their morals, including refusing to put AJ’s mom through an advanced cancer test, because he says it wouldn’t help her and might make her last few months be more painful than necessary. He is easily affected by those around him, in terms of emotions; Devon falls in love with another woman while engaged and kisses her, but then suffers from enormous guilt about it. He intends to marry his fiancé, until his mother urges him to marry someone he truly loves rather than just do this to please everyone else; this gives him the “permission” he needs to search his heart, realizes he doesn’t feel about her the way he should, and break it off… the day of the wedding. Devon comes down hard on one of his residents, when the boy gives a patient a beer to prove she’s an alcoholic, but then reconsiders and gives him a second chance to prove himself. In this way, he slips and slides between 9 tolerance and permissiveness, and a rigid 1 tendency to harshly judge others for their lack of propriety.
