Introverted Sensing
Rather than piece together the mystery of Moonacre intuitively, Maria comes by all of her knowledge by gradually piecing together details, being observant, and pattern-matching to the points in her storybook. She figures out who people are and what things represent by comparisons between how it used to be and how it is now, and by immersing herself in Moonacre. For example, she figures out where the key to the chest is, because she recognizes the pearl inlaid detail from handling her book and how the strap is key-shaped. She notices the stars falling off her ceiling and realizes they are coming close to the 5,000th’s moonrise, which will end them all.
Maria sees the massive black dog in a mirror through her special sight and realizes he is a lion, so she’s not startled by his sudden appearance after she breaks the curse. She also believes in and accepts the lore of Moonacre, showing a respect for how things used to be, and seeing them as having significance in how they will be in the future; for this reason, she reluctantly accepts her quest to find and return the moon pearls to the sea and break the curse over the valley.
Extraverted Feeling
Her arguments, when posed, are not about how she feels, but about what is best for everyone; they need to break the curse, and save all the people in the valley. She initially resists wanting to be involved in the situation, because it is too strange and unusual (Si), but realizes she has a moral responsibility to help her uncle and the others. Maria convinces Robin to listen to her by setting up a trap and demanding he pay attention before she cuts him loose. She, foolishly, assumes Coeur De Noir will be reasonable and want to free them all from the curse, rather than avenge himself on them all, leading to her brief imprisonment.
Her uncle’s TJ briskness and rudeness catches her off guard, and she chastises him for it once or twice after he hurts her governess’s feelings. Maria doesn’t act on things because she feels like it, but because someone or something is hurt, things are broken, and the family legacy is out of alignment. She tries to “fix” situations and people through interference; she writes two invitations for Sir Benjamin and Loveday to meet, assuming they can patch up their relationship, apologize, and fall in love all over again.
Introverted Thinking
She ignores her uncle’s advice to stay out of the woods, because she is trying to figure out the curse, what the grounds are like, and to make sense of things. When she encounters Loveday, she asks lots of questions about her, her relationship with Sir Benjamin, and the curse. She relies on her book to help her figure out where things are and enjoys piecing together clues and following the trail the original Moon Princess left behind to guide her.
She rationally knows Robin knows the woods best of anyone, so she has to recruit him to help her solve the mystery in the few hours they have left. When the moon refuses to take back the pearls, even after she throws the strand and breaks it, Maria realizes they need weight and, since they are stuck now on her bodice, she leaps into the sea. It’s unclear whether she assumes she will ever come up again, but this is also a Fe sacrifice: my life for the greater good.
Extraverted Intuition
Maria is slow to see the big picture. At first, she wants nothing to do with Moonacre or the curse, and tries to get away from all of it, because she doesn’t see it as her problem. But as time passes, she becomes more aware of the need for her involvement. Maria slowly takes what she has seen around Moonacre in mirrors, paintings, and the library, and figures out what needs to be done to restore peace to the realm. Then does it.
The Enneagram 1
Maria is very opinionated and firm in her convictions. She shows disgust regularly; scorn for the house being in disrepair, “ugh, I am NOT wearing that!” at the dress that appears in her room, and a willingness to angrily confront her uncle for being selfish, surly, and unreasonable. She accurately pinpoints that his major sin is the pride that caused him to turn his back on love, and believes the right thing to do would be for him and Loveday to get back together. Maria thinks both of them made a mistake and urges them to fix it.
She takes on the burden of being the new moon princess for the greater good, out of a sense of duty and obligation more than feeling it is genuinely her task. (1s act out of duty to do what is “right,” and never second-guess themselves.) She continues to explore in the woods, despite it being dangerous, and puts her life at risk several times, because it feels right , and she trusts her own instincts to guide her.
The 9 Wing
Rather than get into too many heated arguments with her uncle, Maria just ignores him most of the time and retreats to her room, the library, or the woods. She hates to see anything suffering and rescues the Moonacre hare and adopts it, but when her uncle tries to reinforce the idea that it’s now her responsibility, she shrugs and makes it into a pet instead. She remains calm even in dangerous situations, but ignores the advice of others. Maria wants to be left alone to do her own thing and to restore “peace” to Moonacre by making everything right.

Why Maria Merryweather Isn’t an INFP

Some fans might consider whether Maria Merryweather could be an INFP because she’s imaginative, idealistic, and deeply empathetic. However, several important traits in her behavior and motivations point much more strongly toward ISFJ than INFP.
