Rachel hits it off with Mary right away because “we are simpatico” (sharing similar temperaments and similar views about the nuns). She loved going to her progressive high school called New Trends, where they didn’t care much about basic skills like mathematics, but instead had her reading lofty books and “playing the silent piano” (a large piece of cardboard with the keys painted on it). She often goes along with whatever trouble Mary wants to get up to, but also tends to filter things through her feelings. She hates the school, so she writes her former principle a letter begging to be rescued (Mary has to help her correct the spelling and grammar) and winds up doing pots all the time. She often vents her feelings in simplistic ways (mentioning casually how if she has to tolerate this one more minute, she’s gonna kill herself, and wondering if her folks are aware they’re paying good money for her training as a janitor). Rachel shows her Fi the most right at the end of the film; when Mary makes a life decision she disagrees with, she almost leaves her forever without talking about it or airing her feelings. The Mother Superior has to convince her to make up with her best friend. She can’t understand it, she sees Mary as having been brainwashed, and she feels betrayed by her decision—and she has to step out of her own feelings to realize this is about Mary’s life, not her feelings about Mary’s life. Rachel shows lower Ne in that she’s always up for shenanigans, she loves abstract things, she is often full of thoughts, and she over-estimates her own skills constantly. Her art is terrible (and she often crashes into things, breaks things, or paints over the teacher’s hand because she’s oblivious to her environment), and her sewing skills are abhorrent. When the Mother Superior asks her how she managed to make the dress come out looking like this, Rachel sobs that she didn’t, “it just happened” – nothing is straight, the sleeves are two different lengths, etc. Rachel also knows something is going on with Mary toward the end of their term, but can’t figure out what it is. Rachel showcases lower Te in how testy she gets when she’s stressed. She yells at Mary to get out and leave her alone when she’s sewing, denying herself food and assuming she can finish her dress in time for the contest tomorrow. She also frequently gets things wrong (“prosecuted instead of persecuted” and she claims she has had “malaria” despite never having gone to the tropics).

Rachel has a lot of 9 qualities in that she immediately goes along with whatever Mary wants to do, and gets anxious when it causes trouble – but she has neither guilt over these things (no 1 wing) nor any angry reactivity that would suggest an 8 wing. Instead, she seems to attach herself to Mary, go along with her, and then fret way more than Mary about getting caught (worrying about the Mother Superior finding them in the holy cloister and hastening the girls on the tour; getting nervous whenever she’s hauled in to answer for their shenanigans, etc). Rachel is very loyal to Mary and wants to take on her share of the blame for the things they do together, but also delights in having a friend that thinks similarly to how she does. When Mary decides to join the order, Rachel is upset because she thinks Mary has been “brainwashed.” She shows a lot of 7 qualities in that she’s eager to experience life, she avoids negativity and anything sad, and she is always up for a good time. She immediately goes along with Mary’s schemes because they seem fun, and then makes jokes about being educated as a cleaning lady. Rachel comes back to school every summer full of enthusiastic stories about going abroad and wanting to buy things her dad thought were stupid. She also shows a somewhat 3ish line in refusing to be the only girl who isn’t entering the sewing competition, but then being angry and reactive and frustrated when her efforts turn out terribly.
