Hope McCrea MBTI & Enneagram | Virgin River

ESTJ 1w2 Characters

Hope is the mayor of Virgin River, and has a brisk, straightforward manner. She is really good at organizing events and carrying them off, but sometimes burns bridges in the process with her ‘take charge’ manner. She bosses people around, and frequently struggles to respect, acknowledge, or deal with other people’s sensitive emotions. Her logic is very good, in that she gives people what they need from a factual standpoint, but her relationships are all dumpster fires. She won’t forgive her husband or even talk about their affair; she refused to go to the bedside of the woman he slept with as she lay dying of cancer, even if they had been friends for thirty years; she loves Jack as a son, and is devastated when he refuses to speak to her, but thinks it’s stupid that he can’t forgive her and move past his hurt feelings when she causes trouble between him and Charmaine. She doesn’t want the town to know she’s made up with her husband and torn up the divorce papers, so she urges her husband to go on a few dates with a local woman, never once feeling about her feelings or that she’s using her. When he gets upset with her for not being in an egg race with her, she doesn’t understand why he cares so much and feels flustered in trying to make it up to him. Hope is very traditional and practical, often taking care of things in the present and caring about the reputation of the town. She has a strong sense of what will last and wants to prioritize it. Ultimately, she is all about family and friends, the welfare of the town, and struggles to move on from the past. She dislikes Charmaine because she looks “exactly like her mother” (who slept with Doc). But a lot of the time her decisions are made just about the here and now and what she wants from life, causing some of them to backfire in unforeseen ways.

Enneagram: 1w2

Much of the plot revolves around Hope’s inability to stay in her lane when it comes to everyone else’s personal life. She brings Mel to Hope River because she thinks Doc “needs” an assistant. She then interferes between Jack and Charmaine in their relationship, and causes Jack to refuse to speak to her for a few months. Whenever anyone accuses her of interfering or gossiping, Hope insists that all she wanted to do was “help.” But she also allows her righteous anger to drive her, and rarely questions her own motivations. She has spent twenty years punishing her husband for a one night stand during a difficult time in her marriage; he has apologized to her multiple times, in various different ways, but she never forgives him until she feels upset about losing Jack’s respect, whom she sees like a son. She felt good about punishing him and making him beg, without ever wanting to get over it. Unhealthy 1s move to 4, and become unable to forgive, move on, or overcome past hurts, and she allows this to endanger their relationship. She can also be petulant when stressed.
