MBTI Type: ESFJ
Mel is very straightforward about her feelings and doesn’t hesitate to air them to other people on the spot. She also prioritizes other people and their needs over her own feelings at times. Even though she is falling for Jack, when she finds out his ex-girlfriend is pregnant, she backs away from him and insists on factoring Charmaine into their relationship (Jack as a Fi user doesn’t understand this at all, and wants to know what she has to do with ‘you and me’). She chose a profession that allows her to deal with people and is good at making them like her, trust her, and open up to her. She puts aside her dislike for Charmaine to make sure she has the bet pregnancy possible, but also confronts her about spreading rumors about her in town. She wanted a traditional lifestyle, to be a wife and mother, and fears that not being able to have kids will be a deal-breaker with Jack (he doesn’t care). As a nurse and a midwife, she focuses on the people right in front of her and caring for their immediate needs. She has a wealth of knowledge that she draws upon to diagnose things on the spot, but also struggles to get away from her subjective experiences, her trauma over her stillbirth and the loss of her husband, etc. Mel eventually embraces a different kind of life in Virgin River and allows herself to pursue happiness with Jack.
Enneagram: 2w1
Mel is very concerned with her reputation in the community (she’s horrified to find out people are taking sides in the love triangle and talking about her in a negative way by suggesting she is trying to steal Jack from Charmaine), but also about doing the ‘right thing’ by others. She puts her life at risk a few times to help people, including needing to apologize to Jack for running off to a drug community to patch up a shot man and then refusing to leave until after she’s taken a pregnant girl to the hospital after birthing her baby. She doesn’t ike Charmaine, but forces herself to be nice to her, look after her, and take care of her during her pregnancy, even refusing to see Jack for a while, out of respect for their relationship and how having twins might change their feelings for each other. Mel can be stubborn and insistent on doing her own thing, and resents not being treated with respect or being used as “the coffee girl.”
