Rose lives very much in the present moment; she wants to be down at the pub, drinking and dancing on tables with the gents, or listening to and playing music with her live-in boyfriend. She never guesses who is out to frame her, or why that would be, so much as she reacts to whatever is going on around her, loudly and with bodily presence. She doesn’t care what society thinks and goes her own way in it, choosing to abide by how SHE thinks she wants to live, rather than what society dictates to her (that she shouldn’t be dating a black man, for example, or living with one outside of marriage). She spends a lot of her time at the pub and considers herself a “good person” for trying to befriend Edith, who is an old spinster, according to Rose. But she also has an offensive, abrasive, foul-mouthed side that she shows to everyone constantly, using profanities in public, offending the police, telling people to eff off, insulting them, and taking delight when Edith can finally spout off a string of foul profanities with unbridled delight, after resorting to “tired old insults” (Rose’s words).
